This is the second Abu Garcia reel I have purchased. Both are a great improvement over my spin casting reels. The siver max is exactly the same as the black max with the one exception that the silver max has a small “switch” that allows you to “flip” your lure while holding down the line release lever. When you lift your thumb from the lever, the lever returns to its original position and automatically stops any more line from leaving the reel. The black max continues to allow line to leave the reel until you stop it with your thumb or turn the handle to retrieve line. I personally do not think the flipping switch is necessary because you can use your thumb on the line to do the same thing. With the switch in the off position, the reel allows line to continue leaving the reel until you stop it with your thumb. Both reels are fantastic. If you are new to bait casting reels, you would be smart to start with 10 or 12 pound line as it is less likely to “bird nest”. Use good line that does not have problems with “memory”. That too can increase your bird nests. A great video on YouTube shows how to quickly clear a “backlash” or bird nest: […]

  2. Superb Casting!

I’ve been fishing for 40+ years and have fished with many different brands of baitcasters. I have fished Daiwa, Abu Garcia and Shimano. This is by far the best casting baitcast reel I’ve ever used. I actually tried this is in the left hand model, since I typically use spinning reels left handed. The controls on this reel are very easy to dial in and I use is mostly for largemouth bass fishing. If you get the settings right, “birdnesting” is never an issue. I would highly recommend this reel, I’m thinking about getting another one for my nephew who is wanting a baitcaster.
